Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
I am not 100% sure but I think they are 14mm bolts and I got them from the top the top back of the engine with no extensions for max Torque.
I just noticed that yours is a T56 and mine is an 4L60E, i dont know if its the same.
good luck!

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
I think I got all the bolts out, but I'm not sure.
I took out 6.
Now that I have all of the bolts and connectors off (assuming there are only 6 bolts), ,,,
What is the best way of bringing the transmission out? I tugged on it, but it doesn't raelly want to move.

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
I did mine witha tranny jack which made it much easier but it definetly needed a slight lift and some tugging. try that and let me know what happens.
Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
I'm going to go ahead and start tugging and pulling.
Once again....There are only 6 bolts. Right?
And I'm talking about fromt he bellhousing to the tranny.
I will be back in a few minutes.

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
to the best of my knowledge there were 6 bolts on my 4L60E, actually my tranny is here at work in the garage so i will go check for you and I to will be back in a sec.
Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
Hmmmm... I have a spare T56 sitting in my garage, and it has 8 bolts that mount it to the bell housing. Count 'em:

After you get all 8 bolts out, you have to pull the clutch fork off the t-bolt that it pivots on..... tranny won't come off with that still on the T/O bearing.
I've found the easiest way to get the 2 top bolts is to push up on the damper to drop the tailshaft of the tranny down a bit, then get a longgggg (30") extension, and go after the bolts by reaching from the inside of the car through the shifter cutout. Requires someone on the bolt end to guide the socket/u-joint combo onto the bolt head.
Based on the large number of very basic questions you are asking, it would appear that its a good idea to get at least a cheap shop manual, like the Chilton's F-Body manual. It will help with a lot of the things you appear to be struggling with, based on numerous posts.

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
i just pulled my T56 out about an hour ago and yes, there are 8 15mm bolts that hold the trans to the BH. Then there are 6 14mm bolts from the BH to the block.
I used a swivel joint and about 18" of extentions on a 1/2" drive. Undo the crossmember and support the tail end of the trans with a jack. Let the tail end down about 3-4" (make sure you loosen the exhaust connection to the cat to give it some room to flex, the engine tilts in this maneuver), and reach in from the rear of the trans to the bolts. I got mine out in about 20 minutes by doing this. You can pull the fork off the TO bearing before taking the bolts out. Then reposition the jack to near the center of the trans with a board between the trans and jack head. From there just work the thing out. I had to get my cousin to help me balance the trans on the board while moving the jack around, it WILL tip over if you're not careful. So be careful. lol
HTHs and good luck

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
I got those two top bolts off pretty easy (cause they were already loose).
Now that I think about it, alot of bolts were loose. And there were various things missing since I got this motor put in. One of the optispark lines wasn't there
, among other things.
Anyway, I got the tranny down.
since the fork was loose because the bolt backed out 1/4", the edge of the pressure plate was scratched up pretty good because the fork was leaned up against it.
Is there anything I should be real cautious of on reinstall? How tight should I retighten that fork bolt?

There are some smart fellers here, but you need to take their advice! How's the hand?
Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
Been there, done it that 'redneck' way too
I got a tranny pan thing-a-mabob from Jegs for about $40 to replace the piece of wood. You pull the pad out of the hydralic jack and drop thier pan in. Haven't tried it yet, but it's got to be better than the balancing act & a piece of wood!

Re: Trouble getting to upper tranny bolts..q
the balacing act isnt THAT bad with two people... long as you both know exactly whats goin on and which way its leanin lol... but that was on a silverado with plenty of room to work
well gl with your trans job hope you have more luck than i did (I got sold a trans that had the same problem as the one i took out!
) that was fun to find out...
