transmission problem?

I have a 1994 Z28 with the a4 transmission and 144,000 miles. A few weeks ago I noticed that when driving at highway speeds if I push on the accelerator to speed up a little I can feel a slipping/jerking in the drivetrain. At first I thought it was the engine missing under load but as the problem is getting a little worse I have begun to realize that I believe it is the transmission causing this feeling. This problem doesn't seem to occur when taking off and it seems to upshift ok even if you step into it. I thought that it might be the transmission slipping in and out of overdrive but I still have this problem even if I put it in 3rd and keep it from shifting into overdrive. Has anyone else had a similar problem? Is this the start of the transmission going out or some other problem? Any suggestions on what direction to go with this problem would be appreciated.

3rd/4th clutch packs are notorious for going out.... Might be time for a rebuild...
