Trans Fluid Change

I need to have my ATF changed. Car has 65K mi. on it w/ the original fluid. I have no slipping problems right now. The car is my daily driver, not abused. Should I:

1. Have a shop drop the pan, replace filter, gasket & 4-5 qts.
2. Have a shop flush all ATF, replace filter, gasket & 11 qts.
3. Do it my self, see #1
4. Use regular Dex III or synthetic?

NOTE: Yes, I have searched the forum & can't really get a clear answer.

Drop the pan and do it yourself.

Re: Trans Fluid Change

It is really easy to do it yourself. Just make sure when you take the filter out that the O-ring around the tube on the filter came out too. If it is still in that one hole on the transmission, be real carefull getting it out. I'm only 17 and have done it quite a few times. So its no biggy.

Although I'm mechanically inclined, I've never change the fluid on a 4L60e before. Any preference to Dex III or synthetic??

Re: Trans Fluid Change

Drop the pan change the filter and do the flush yourself. Fill up the pan with five qts. and disconnect the return line from the cooler and start up the car to flush out all the old fluid from the converter. You will see a the color change so you will know when to shut the car off. You will need a helper though, someone will need to have the tranny in drive.
