trans extemely hard to get in gear...

I finished my A4-M6 swap. The trans is ungodly amounts of hard to get in gear while the car is on. We took the trans off thinking it was the fork not in place, no dice. So I'm thinking the syncro's (sp?) are shot in the trans. Does this sound like a logical answer? I figure I'll pick up a referbished trans off ebay, ro somewhere (1K-1.5K) and try to get my money back from the guy I baught this one from (off a wrecked car of the same year as my own)

Could there be another reason why it's so hard to get in gear? 80% of the time it's really hard (i mean like 2 hands pulling), the other 20 it slides right in, and reverse can only be acheived when the car is off

I drove it for about 2 hours today, and with different drivers, it didn't get any easier as time went on.

We checked the trans fluid, there was a little much in it, so we drained it out, still same problem.

Does it sound like a syncronizer pepblem? I can't think of anything else I havn't tried to get this thing running correctly.

Thanks for your replies.

you are looking at the wrong parts

Your clutch is not fully dis-engaging or the pilot bearing is sticking.

I would start by bleeding the clutch Hydrolics

good luck!

I don't see how that could be the problem, I got a new master/slave cylinder from GM, and it comes sealed. After I put it in I pumped the pedal and had someone watch the fluid, no bubbles.

The car drives fine, but it is a royal pain in the *** to get it into gear. I mean my right hand is raw from the stiches on the **** diggin into my hand as I pull to get it to shift.

I've taken the trans off and the clutch and everything look fine (different people looking at it too)

Sure it's not a syncro problem?

well is it grinding or going into gear hard? if it is grinding then the syncro's are toast. If it is just going into gear hard the syncro's are still alive...but won't live long like this.

If at any time you let the trans hang from the disk while installing it the disk may be bent and will need to be replaced.

if the Pilot bearing or bushing is not installed correctly it will cause this

LT1s are notorious for this problem and many use the drill mod and a McLoud adjustable Master to fix it.

If it goes into gear easy when the car is not running and is hard when it is running it is a clutch/pilot problem point blank...

Good luck!

Well, I got it fixed, the master cylinder just can't extend far enough, causing the clutch not to be pushed in all the way. So I make-shifted a way to get the master cylinder on the pedal safe and secure, and it works fine. I'll eventually get an adjustable master so it can go on the "right way"

Thanks for you help everyone

I had the same problem too when I did mine... the main thing that indicates when the master cylinder isn't aligned properly is that the pushrod (when clipped on the clutch pedal) won't be parallel to the cylinder body. To those converting from A4-M6 , take note!
