Tranny Rebuild- Performace

Well I'm just about getting my car ready to go and while my dad and I were in the living room talking about whats left to do the subject came up about the transmission.

The car was purchased with 280K+ miles on it. Engine is newer now <50k miles on it.

But we have no idea on how that tranny is gonna do in the future. I do know that it shifts pretty good and all the gears and reverse work fine before my engine went out.

My dad was wondering how much a performance built one was, and I told him around $1400-$2000 depending on what you want and with or with a torque convertor

He was wondering if it would be worth it to buy a tranny from a wrecking yard and rebuild it himself. He's very knowledgeable about cars and rebuilding them.
That was what he was in business for back in his early twenties and since his older days he has rebuilt a 1996 Chevy truck tranny 2x and a 95 plymouth voyager tranny. He knows his stuff, and he's helped me a lot getting my car together.

Would it save us any money if he did? Just wanted to hear some opinions.

Thanks

For someone with that experience, a stock rebuild shouldn't be a problem. A 4L60E performance build is a horse of a different color.

So I take it that it involves more than just performance based parts and includes machine work and such?

He was just tossing the idea around. I personally don't mind spending $1400 on a new tranny that can handle up to 500 HP and ships free...

It's knowing what parts to use, where to get them, and how to install them. The 4L60 and 4L60E are common trannys but not commonly used as a performance tranny. Some people know how to make them live with performance useage, but it's not like a 'glide where it's common knowledge what needs to be done and how to do it. Many of the builds fail early and often.

I'd go with www.performabuilt.com if you're looking for a performance 4L60E.
