Tranny problem need help?

What would cause a delay when putting the car into gear? I mean it takes maybe 10 to 30 secs until im able to take off. The tranny only has 40k on it, and it doesnt slip or give me any problems whatsoever when driving it. Another question is when you put your car in drive, what happens inside the tranny itself to make it engage? I hope its something simple becasue i dont have money to sink into a rebuild.

10-30 seconds sounds a little extreme.. but does it do it worse in the mornings or when the car is cold?? whens the last time u had the filter/fluids changed? might be a good idea to change em
