Unhappy Tranny Issues

Just bought a 1993 Z28 with auto trans. The trans will only work in 1St and reverse. Any ideas about was could be wrong or do I need a new tranny. It is their some thing else that could be wrong?

I only paid $300 dollars for it runs great and has a 2 year ond paint job and I knew the trans would not shift. Just trying to see if their could be another issue with the trans. Thanks Ray

Well, then a rebuild is in order. $300 is not bad.

Re: Tranny Issues

The '93 Camaros still used a governor. This is the large round cover at the rear/drivers side. There's a possibility that the valve in the governor is stuck, or the governor gear is bad/broken. Another possibility is that the TV valve is sticking.

Try this...Start the car, and let it idle. Lift the hood and locate the TV cable. You'll see a small black "button" that attatches it to the throttle body. This may be under a black plastic cover. Once you locate it, pull the wire part of the cable all the way forward a few times and let it snap back.

After you do this, try driving it again. Sometimes this will free up a stuck TV valve. Even if this works, it's probably only a short term fix. This would indicate that something is coming apart in the transmission which would neccessitate a rebuild.

If your problem isn't in one of these places, it could still be a stuck valve. You're fluid condition will help diagnose this. Is it still pink? Does it smell burnt? There are many internal problems that will cause this, also.

If you need any further help, feel free to call me. I'll try walking you through a couple of things to try.

Re: Tranny Issues

Thanks for the info Frank I will check the tv cable and governor this weekend and if I need some help I will give you a call. I am new to this board and have seen several post about your knowledge of these transmissions so I may send the trans to you. Thanks Ray
