Bummer. My A4 is on the way out as well. Overrun gears are gone and anymore than 1/2 throttle results in a bang from the tranny and it slipping to the rev limiter (if I stay in it).

Take the opportunity an do what I am. A4 -> M6 conversion . The kit I ordered shipped today, so it shouldn't be too long before I'm rowin the boat...

if you abuse stock automatics they WILL go . But im not worried about my stout M6. They are very strong stock, and can take much more abuse than a stock auto. Ive got 90k on it, with stock clutch. So, conclusion............convert.

That is silly. There in no need to convert to an M6. Yeah, if you beat a stock tranny, it will die. It's that way with pretty much all stock parts! There are plenty of guys running beefcake motors with an A4. I've had no troubles the past 2 years with my A4, but yeah, when the tranny was stock it died almost immediately after the stroker install.

The point of this post? Build your tranny the same way you build an engine. A knowledgable builder with quality parts will get you on the right track.

Umm.. Yeah. You can build a 4L60E up, but will it last as long as a stock T56? Doubtful if your making serious power. I say if you have an auto and its failing or failed and have always wanted an M6, why waste the $$ on an Auto rebuild. Spend a little more and get what you want. Simple as that. I want something fun to drive so I'm switching.

Wrong, and wrong. On the contrary, autos are preferred among the vast majority of cars making "serious power". Your definition of "serious power" probably isn't the same as mine. The T56 is a good solid tranny, but throw a stroker with a power adder at it and come and see me then. I'm not saying an M6 won't survive, but it's not as bulletproof as you are proposing. In meantime, here is a website that shows what happens to many M6 cars with big HP.

Right. We're talking 4L60E's here not TH400. The TH400 is an awesome tranny for drag racing, but for an daily driver it would suck a$$ unless you put one of those very expensive OD tail shafts on it.

I went through a stock tranny, and this was my 2nd built tranny, lol. I think I'll prolly end up just getting it built again.

I want to do the conversion too but dont know what i need to do it. I seen that someone said they bought a kit? where did you get this at and how much was it? Arent t-56's like $3000 bucks new? And how did you hang your clutches? Also, would a th-400 bolt right up, or would i need to change driveshaft length? I need some info, i know nothing about tranny swaps.

I got my kit from Ron@lt1s.com the kit was 1800 and came with everything needed to do the swap except for a few wiring pigtails. He had even offered to send me the M6 PCM & wiring harness if I sent him my A4 ones, but since my car is a daily driver, I would not have been able to have the car down while harness exchange took place.

I also decided not to use the clutch that came with it and bought a new SLP one & a Hurst Billet Plus shifter.

Can't wait to get started on it.

T56 is strong but by no means indestructable.. I broke mine as a bolt on car.. Same as LJ along w/ numerous driveshaft yokes.. Its a matter of the clutch really.. put a real clutch in the car and things are going to start breaking.. A4's are naturally easier on the driveline due to ablilty to pre load.. but are prone to breaking like everything else out there..

Tony is right. The TH400 needs to GV OD, even with 3.42's, like mine. I would say that unless you are making really big hp, the M6 is by far the best way to go. I am sorry that I "outgrew" it. It's an awsome tranny for a stock piece. A 4L60 is only good up to a point, and that is somewhere south of an M6, no matter who builds it. If I wanted to run one though, I'd call Carl Rossler at http://www.rosslertrans.com/

He builds the best automatics around.
