Traction Control Retrofit

Have a 1995 Z28 Convert (M6) and and beginning the planning/design process of jettisoning the 10 bolt rear (likely to be 9" Ford) and was wondering about the merits of retrofitting the ASR (traction control) as the ASR was not an option on the convertible. Does anyone who has driven/owned cars that are both ASR/Non-ASR feel it is worth doing this as a retrofit?

It will be a waste of time, effort & money. I got talked into ordering ASR on my car when I was ordering it from the fleet mgr back in '96. He told me it would add to the resale value. Hah! 14 years later, I still have the car and it's not worth squat even though it has only 37k miles on it.

The ASR as helped me twice in the 14 years I've owned the car. I now have a little gizmo installed that turns it off ten seconds after I start the car because I got tired of turning it off every time.

Another thing - only one cold air kit really fits with ASR - the Lingefelter Super Tube. All others will hit the extra brake line that comes out of the ABS unit.

Don't waste your time!

Had not thought about interference with mods. I also have a STB that I bet is a problem with the throttle control.

My inclination was that it would not be worth it but had a ride in a turbo Panamera with the "launch control" the other day and it got me to thinking...

I have ASR on my car as well. To me there is zero benefit to it. Actually can be dangerous if you are trying to pull out on a road that is heavy with traffic because if you spin..it sort of leaves you sitting still for a second. I would surely not install it on a vehicle thinking there was any benefit. Not sure for guys who drive in snow/ice...maybe some people have seen the good side of it.

ASR is not worth incorporation into your car. I have driven in all weather conditions. the ONLY time that it has helped me is when I drove my camaro for the first time in the rain getting on the highway. I am trying to find a way to disable it.

Well, modern Porsche launch control cannot be compared in any way, shape or form to the crude mid-90's ASR that came on Vettes & Z28s. ASR is WAY too aggressive. Instead of gently easing th throttle closed a bit until wheelspin stops, it mashes the throttle closed causing the car to fall on its face. It's total garbage. It helped me once on really slippery grass while trying to park on a hill and once in the snow. Other than that, it's been turned off.

I even went so far as to have Ed Wright at Fastchip "detune" the ASR as much as he could. It's still too aggressive and no good for launches.

Super easy to have it default to off instead of on. See my post from a few years ago:

Thanks for the response everyone. Basically sounds like if I am on icy road in the middle of the night during a blizzard, ASR has a 50/50 chance of actually being the cause of my accident. Kind of settles that question.
