Torque Converter Install: What to buy?
Torque Converter Install: What to buy?
Well I am looking at getting my Midwest 2800 stall and was wondering what else I need to buy for the install. I am going to be doing a B&M tranny cooler also. Supposedly this is the best mod for a A4, and I'll be reporting back on how it turns out.
I'll probably need a new transmission filter right? What fliud is everyone using? Redline, Mobil 1, Royal Purple?
Just trying to accumulate what I need over the next few weeks here to get it installed asap.
How long did your install last and does anyone have any good guides to follow other than Javier's?
Thanks.

Re: Torque Converter Install: What to buy?
I did the front and rear seals, oil pan gasket, filter and new fluid when I changed the stall on mine. I used regular Pennzoil fluid. I'd still use regular fluid if I had another A4.
Also keep in mind that tired transmission with a number of miles on them will most likely not appreciate synthetic or even new fluid sometimes.
I did the install all by myself. It took a while the first time because I could not remove one of the bellhousing bolts on the driver side, so I ended up lowering the k-member a bit. I just dropped the tranny the other day and it only took an hour or two, that's in a garage with the car sitting on ramps and jack stands. Probably another 1-2 hours to put it back in. It will be quicker if you had some help.
When installing the new TC, make sure to fill it with fluid and when you put it on the tranny shaft, keep rotating it while lightly pushing it in. There will be 3 stages of it going in. Also use thread locker on the torque converter to flexplate bolts.
Get a big/wide pan (one of those flat metal ones that will fit the tranny too) for catching the fluid. There will most likely be lots of it. When I did it the first time, my hair looked like I had gel in it only it was all tranny fluid.

Re: Torque Converter Install: What to buy?
Thanks guys, do you think 60k is too many miles for synthetic or new fluid? I thought they came stock with Synthetic in the tranny and engine. Perhaps I was mistaken.
I am hoping to enlist the help of a few guys who have done this before *cough* Darkhorse, Waswa, Cantonracer, and Jonny *cough*
But I want to have all the parts laid out first.
Mr Madwolf, I know I am asking alot about tunes lately but yet another question...do I need a tune for a TC? I thought I read something about needing the shift points corrected for it. Thanks.
Sure it was hair gel, you like tranny installs a little too much

Re: Torque Converter Install: What to buy?
I'm pretty sure LT1 Z28s had regular oil from factory. I would use regular oil in the tranny.
As for the transmission and leaks, this time around I didn't manage to get any on my hair while pulling the tranny....................till I laid the tranny on the pan with oil in it. Doh! Oil all over my pants this time
and when I tried to move away from the incoming fluid I suddenly felt something familiarly wet in my hair.
Needless to say, A4 goodbye, hello less leaky M6.

Tranny Cooler already mentioned. B&M 24,000 deal from Summit.
I read in a few places last night not to use synthetic and even some saying not to change it at all if it has high miles. 60k I dont feel is real high, so we'll give it a try.
I continue to want a T56, perhaps after I get this job I am after I will make the switch.
