Torque Converter

I ran into a good deal on a used Vigilante 3200 Torque Converter. Will it be a good fit for my 94 LT1 with only minor bolt on mods? (I have a 3.42 gear). Will I lose a lot of street driveablity?

Re: Torque Converter

I wouldn't buy it. Problem is Vigilante underrates thier converters. So a Vig3200 actually stalls at 3400-3600 rpm's. Stock internal LT1's are much better suited for 2600-3000 stalls. I wouldn't go any higher then that until you get a beefy cam.

Re: Torque Converter

Get your answer from the horses mouth...call PI or look on their website www.converter.com and ask them. I deal with Vicki, she's the only female there...I wouldn't rule it out yet. I ran a 3600 in my 383 with a tiny cam and 3.42 gears for 10 years. Got 5 tenths and zero drivability issues and 24 mpg on the hwy...and they will restall it and rebuild it for $225...

Re: Torque Converter

If your not planning on doing a heads/cam package then the only thing calling PI might do is get you a restall to a smaller stall speed. But then you still have to weigh the cost of the verter and restall (if any) and see if it's still worth it vs buying new. As long as your keeping stock internals then 3600 is too much stall and drivability will be bad.

If you are planning on doing some internal engine upgrades in the not so distant future then I would consider buying this stall and maybe sitting on it until you get the cam in.

Good luck.

Re: Torque Converter

I disagree with Darrens99...I put a 3000 vig in a stock 95 Impala and picked up 4 tenths and there were no drivability issues, put a 3800 vig in my old 72 Chevelle with a ZZ4 motor in it which was not far from stock and had zero issues and got 5 tenths, went with a 2800 in a totally stock 97 Z with 3.23s and it was not enough stall, restalled it for 3200 and woke everything up, got 4 tenths and no drivability issues, and currently have a 3600 in my 383 Bird which had a small cam and 3.42 for 10 years and had no issues...The Vig is way different from most other converters. Its very efficient and cannot be compared to stuff like TCI and B&M, etc there's no comparison. I have 10 years of experience with the Vigs and I don't think 3200 is too high for your application, but like I said it wouldn't hurt to talk to them about it.

Re: Torque Converter

I have a 24-2600 converter for sale for 100 bucks. It was made by the Oregon transmission company. It is a lock up, and drives exactly like a stock converter until you hit it. I had a best 60ft of 1.73 with drag radials and slight traction issues and a best quarter of 12.10 with a cam only car. It is less than a year old and in perfect shape. Let me know.

Re: Torque Converter

I would have to agree with ABA383. If you think it's a good price, buy it. A 3200 is not that big.

Re: Torque Converter

I had a Yank 3200 with VERY few bolt-ons and it will rock you world at the strip! Not bad street manners either. If your not going to buy it then give me a shot at it!! On second thought, no you dont want it! Hook me up!

Re: Torque Converter

I disagree with aba383. remember that he has a 383 and aftermarket cam. Your internally stock. Do a search in LT1 tech here and you'll see that most of the LT1 guys do not recommend higher then 3000 stalls on internally stock LT1's. Remember guys that this is a Vig3200 so it's not a 3200 stall. It's 3600 (sometimes they flash as high as 3800) and that's too much for stock LT1's.

Get a cam and that stall will rock. But as long as your stock it's just a tad too much stall.

Good luck.
