T56: What could this sound be?

So I just bought my car last saturday (in sig), and I also havent had much time to drive it this week due to work and bad weather. I'm still getting used to all it's quirks, sounds and what's normal etc.

Anyways, I kept hearing this faint ticking, almost knocking kind of sound. I listened to people's sound clips posted in the LT1 section over the years now and then when someone posted about a spun bearing or whatever bottom-end problem they were having. Mine is no where near as loud or noticable, and it's so quiet in fact it seems like I'm the only one that hears it.

So I was out in the parking lot listening to it idle, not in gear ebrake on and it definately sounded from the bottom of the motor... then I got in and depressed clutch and it completely went away... reved with clutch depressed and I couldnt hear it at all... got my wife to climb in and press clutch so I could listen and its still gone... until the clutch engages again then I can hear it.

So is this a normal sound or a developing problem with my clutch assembly? Could it still be motor related?

Sorry, I cant provide a sound clip as it's so faint I don't think a microphone would pick it up or it would not be distinguishable enough in a sound clip from normal motor noise.

Thing is also that I really stretched my budget to get this thing... not a good idea I know, but I've wanted an f-body forever. I knew if I didnt get one now, I probably never would. I wont have money to fix it for a while, and it's going to stay stock for a long time.

So any help would be appreciated, please tell me some good news... lol. Thanks.

Chris

That sounds normal to me. My '99 does it and so did my '02. It's kind of like a chatter sound when the clutch is released, but goes away when you push the clutch in. I've just gotten used to it.

Now, if only the other problems with my '99 were so simple...

Yes, that's exactly it like you describe. How about this, would this sound also be present cruising at around 2000-3000 RPMs? I've noticed it also driving which was why I thought it was the motor. But when I did that test in the parking lot I felt so relieved that it wasnt. It's the same chattering sound that I'm hearing driving or sitting at idle with the clutch engaged in neutral.

My '99 makes the same noise... FWIW. Only 60k miles on it, so the engine *Should* be able to be ruled out. I remember my '96 with 70k miles making the same noises.

I've never noticed it while driving, but if it is the sound I think it is, I wouldn't worry about it.

Here's my noise. See if its simliar to the one yours does. If it is, either its normal.. if it isn't, I've got a worse problem.

Yeah, that's the noise only mine is like 1/3 the intensity and I can't hear it as much through the shifter. It's still enough for me to pick out though. It's probably normal, so I won't worry about it unless it starts to get worse.

FWIW, the LT1 seems to consistantly pull pretty hard and doesn't seem down on power so I guess nothing is wrong.

Thank you all for your quick replies and for the sound clips. I appreciate it.

Mine is an aftermarket Hurst shifter, which may transfer some noise. As long as yours is like my sound I think it should be fine.

I hear two noises. I hear a rattling and a banging. Is the banging just your keys? Just trying to figure which noise you're referring to.

The rattling sounds like an aftermarket shifter. My Pro 5.0 makes lots of noise too.

But then I also have a loud banging/clunking noise that is either coming from the rear end or the transmission after it's been driven on the interstate for a while and then you are at low speeds turning, both with the clutch in and out. It also makes loud popping when coasting to a stop. I took it to a dealership several times and they said they have no idea what it is. God I hate this car.

From the way you describe it, that sounds like a bad throwout (release) bearing for your clutch. The bearings are worn and that is the sound you hear when the bearing is spinning on the yoke. Especially if it goes away when you press the clutch pedal in. It would also appear to be come from the bottom like you describe it. Thats my opinion though but I am not listening to it myself, could be any number of things but that sure sounds like a throwout bearing gone bad.

What you're hearing is the layshaft in the transmission free-spinning. When you depress the clutch, the layshaft spins to a stop.

It's not a problem.
