Re: T56 tranny
Since you have a 1993, are you looking for the M28 (3.36 1st gear) or M29 (2.97 1st gear)? Would you be willing to go to a 1994-1997 MM6 version, with the 2.66 1st gear?
Re: T56 tranny
im not sure. im new to this kind of transmission. the car that im looking at had the transmission removed, and he said all it needs is a new tranny. so i dont really know what kind of gears i need or what is the best ratio is for this transmission.
Re: T56 tranny
You need to know which rear axle ratio you have. Try and find the RPO code label in your glove box, console or drivers side door. The 3.36 1st gear (M28) came with the 2.73 rear axle ratio (RPO GU2) and the 297 1st gear (M29) came with the 3.36 rear axle ratio (GU4). Both the tranny and the rear axle RPO codes should be on the label.
You could physically fit a 2.66 1st gear (MM6) tranny, but you will have the wrong rear axle ratios, and the 2.66 1st gear will make it slower. The MM6 came with 3.42 rear axle (GU6). The MM6 has a higher torque capacity, according to the factory.... 450 lb-ft, vs 400 lb-ft for the M29 and 360 lb-ft for the M28. There is also a difference in the VSS sensor between the 93 and the later M6 trannies, and the later models will come with the skip-shift solenoid, which the 93's did not have. No big deal on the skip-shift, since no one wants it anyway. If you don't connect it up electrically (and the 93 ECM has no skip-shift capability), it will simply not work (which is good).
You might want to look at this table of tranny data on the 4th Gen FAQ:
