T56 output shaft question.

How much play should there be from an output shaft in a T56? I just bought a used T56 and there seems to be quite a bit of end play.

TIA

With no yoke in it there will be some end play. The yoke acts like a rear bearing,(there's a bushing in the tail housing.) Slide your driveshaft in there and see if there's still end play.

Sorry, the original trans is still in the car (A4), so I cannot use the driveshaft to see if that will help. I just got the T56 in order to do a conversion. As far as the amount of endplay, I can move the output shaft in and out better than an inch.

Ive got 2 T56's I have acces to, both LT1 ans LS1. I will take some measurements. That does sound excessive. I was thinking you were talking left to right end play, not front to back. Ive also got the manual, Ill see what holds it in place. Ill post back this afternoon.

Hey man, bad news. Neither one of my t56's have any endplay. Here is the r&r manual from shoeboxes site. http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#t56 I hope you can work something out with the seller.

Ouch, tough break. Now would be a good time to get it built though.

Yeah im pretty bummed right now. I guess getting it built would be a positive, but that would cost way more than I planned for. Ive been waiting for a T56 for my car for 2 years, now that I finally have it, I get screwed with one that needs rebuilt. Perfect.
