I am curious as to why the keys were breaking. Judging by the blocker rings it looks like that it may have had enough play to to spin then when the transmission shifted into 4th gear it pretty much crushed them and knocked the ends off? I am guessing it was from improper shimming tolerances giving the rings slack... any opinions?

My best guest after lookng at the pics.
1) countershaft endplay
2) shifting fork loose on the rail or worn pads.
3) worn bearing journals. it could happen!
specs.
input shaft/ main shaft endplay .000-.002
countershaft preload .ooo-.002
countershaft extension shim .002-.000 endplay.
