t56 emergency question

I just purchased a used t56. I was told it was just rebuilt 600 miles ago. I was checking the flywheel and the surface is no where near flat. with a strait edge across it I can plainly see waves. Also I looked at the input shaft and I can noticibly feel it wiggle! My guess is that there is something wrong with the shaftbearings, and that ruined the clutch and flywheel.

What do you guys think, and what do you think might be wrong with the tranny.

Re: t56 emergency question

the input will usually have about .030 to .050 play in the input shaft. Remember also that it has a pilot bearing in the front to support it.

Re: t56 emergency question

Just something to think about:

I ruined two clutches - the original and a very expensive (though poor quality) spec stage III because the imput shaft on my transmission developed a groove right where the seal sits. This allowed oil to pour down the input shaft and onto the disk/pp/flywheel assembly presumably under hard braking. I would definately suggest tipping the thing forward to see if you can get any oil to run out. If you do find a groove then have a shop grind it smooth for you if possible.. the seal will then sit fine.

As for endplay.. yes there will be a little though not much. As Joe said .03 to .05 is normal. If in doubt take it to a shop or two. They ought to be willing to take a moment and give you their opinions especially if it could mean some serious business for them. I don't think endplay would cause damage to the flywheel because, when installed, the end of the input shaft is held in place by a bearing/bushing. Excessive endplay is probably a good indicator that the transmission itself may have other problems though. One other note: when you install the transmission make sure you use a bushing.. do NOT use a bearing. I have personally examined two - one after 75,000 miles (presemably the original) and one after only 10,000 miles (after that crappy stage III exploded and blew a big hole in the bellhousing). In both cases the bearing was toast or pretty much nonexistant.

Some slight grooves in the flywheel are normal. Get it turned and you should be good to go.
