Re: T56 almost impossible to go into 6th gear

Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of finding a shop that will work on the 6-speeds. They are hard to find.

Exclamation Re: T56 almost impossible to go into 6th gear

OK. I found a shop recommended by my trusted tranny guy who specialize in standard trannys. They want to do a rebuild. For the rebuild and a 2 year warrenty they want $1813 before taxes !!!!!!!

On the other hand, my tranny guy said he's never worked on the T56 but if it's similar to most other standard trannys (Is it???) he would tear it down for $300 and try to find the problem. He said most likely the parts will be $150-$200 and the labor would be $200-$250.

I think I'll take my chances with the second option. What do ya'll think??

they are like other standard transmissions only with an extra gear. Also a first timer could pull down a t-56 and rebuld it just by following the intructions. I would go ith option #2. If he has done standard transmissions before. than he should be able to do a t-56 as well..

OK. He owns his own shop and is a master ASE tech and has been working on them for over 25 years so I think he'll do OK.

Try buying a 5-6 block ring, 6th gear, and a 6th block ring.

Plus labor your looking at

250+50+140+150=590.00

You can get the parts from ebay or D&D.. not sure where he is getting his parts (Ft. Knox, maybe) or how much mr. ASE is charging. Labor rate only 5hrs i think. Take is some where else, e is trying to pull one over on ya.

"Mr. ASE" said $300 removal/reinstall. $150 parts/$200 labor.

This sounds resonable. Also, once I find out wants broken I can order the parts from wherever I want. It will just take longer and he may not want his shop bay tied up that long.

OK. Finally got the money to take it to the shop. Ended up being a bent 5-6 shift fork due to worn out shims and pads. Is this normal on a t56 with only 96xxx miles?

Depends on how hard you shift it, lubricants used for the life of the transmission, and the quality of the pads from the factory. But yes, that sounds like a correct diagnosis and is not unheard of from a transmission with that many miles on it.

OK. The final vertict is in! The 5-6 shift fork, sliders, shims and pads all had to be replaced. He said everything else looked great. The total cost was $800.
