T5- shifter does not return to center

Hey guys, hopefully someone knows T5s well enough to help.
I have a T5 from a 97 camaro V6. The problem is the shifter does not return to center when I pull it left (for 1st or 2nd). It also goes too easily from right to left. I have inspected the shifter and everything is fine with it. So I try moving the shift lever in the trans with my finger. When I move it from the 1-2 side to the center it almost feels like there is a detent between 1-2 and center. I looked for wear or damage on the detent area but there is nothing obvious. The trans is from a wrecker so I do not know the history; could be abuse or someone leaning on the shifter while driving?

Any ideas? I am concerned because it is pretty easy to go too far when down-shifting from 5th. I might hit 2nd instead of 4th.

Thanks for any help.
Cory

Did you ever find out what the problem was? I have the same detent issue (except on the other side).

"CoryM" has not been back to this site in almost 2 years. You could try sending an e-mail. Left click on his screen name and there is an option to send him an e-mail on the dropdown.

Just curious.... when you pull the shifter assembly off the trans does the lever then "center"?

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the shifter. It did the same with the original and the Hurst I put in there.
