t-56 help asap!!!!!!!!!!

Ok i have a 93 6 speed trans am. About 15 min ago i was rippin through the gears and all the sudden i heard this loud clanking noise...sounded like the rear end...but its not..its comin from the transmission. Now..it shifts smoothly in ever gear..but also..it happens in every gear but goes away when i put it in neutral. Could it be the tranny or the clutch???(the clutch is old). Its def. not the rear end. If you can help me asap i would really appreciate it thanks.

sounds like pilot bearing or throwout bearing. I don't think it's the tranny because it shifts fine. If you are going to do a clutch soon change the bearings

If you broke the input shaft it would make noise in nuetral and not move. The pilot bearing goes around the input shaft and wears out. I don't think you can put the 99 tranny in your car. The clutch is different becuase the flywheel and bellhousing are different. I don't know if they make an adapter plate for the bellhousing but even if they did you would need a custom crossmember and maybe even a driveshaft. To do a simple swap you have to stay in between 93-97. I had mine rebuilt with the viper upgrades for around 600.

well what if i got a 98+ clutch?....also....if it was the pilot bearing would it make a solid thunk like that? it sounds like a pretty solid noise...and if im goin about 10 miles an hour...its like something comes around and hits somethin else....its a wierd noise. The clutch still works perfectly.....this sucks

No the clutch won't work, If you are going to be modding you car then upgrade the clutch to say a spec stage three, and chanhe the bearings. The pilot bearing can be a loud noise. It is kind of hard to tell without hearing it. My bearing, clutch, and tranny went at almsost the same time, and with the mileage it had on it I just upgraded everything.

The input shaft is different on the 98+ as well. Not worth messing with that transmission.
This may sound funny, but did you check your tranny mount?

Something similar was happening to me and the first thing I thought was my tranny was going. I got the car on a lift and 2 of my crossmember bolts were backing out and my X-member was hanging down about 3/4" Get the car on a lift and go under there with a pry bar and see if anything moves at all. There maybe a simple solution.

ok update...i just jacked the back tires off the ground..went under there....and it sounds like its coming from the rear..which doesnt make sense...i put my hand on the torque arm..and thats where the biggest feeling was comin from.....none of the tires wabble....i cant see where the drivesahft is hittin anything..and also...it only does it when its in gear...gas on or not...which doesnt make sense..cuz if it was the rear..wouldnt it do it no matter what???maybe i cant hear right..i figured its not the tranny cuz of the sound..and also..if it was...i wouldnt feel the shock on the torque arm cuz of the rubber boot.....im lost..

i'd say check that trans mount again really good...use a pry bar to see if the tranny moves. Its hard to move it by hand.

taking off hard

Have you hooked up good lately im guessing you have almost bald tires in rear, prob broke shim. when I put my 4.10s in there was a shim broken off but luckly no noise was coming from it, the guy said dam your lucky there was no noise from rear.
