switching LT1 rear to LS1 rear

ok I have a 97 formula auto with 2.73 gears and I am buying a rear from a 2000 Trans Am with 3.73 gears. Neither rear is set up for traction control so I don't have to worry about that and I know the brakes are going to be different. The guy I am buying the rear from told me that the parking brake stuff has been taken off of it. Now my question is, will the parking brake parts from my LT1 rear swap over to this new rear? If not, then if I get the parking brake parts from another LS1 car and put them on this rear will it work in my car?
thanks for any help

Re: switching LT1 rear to LS1 rear

The LT1 and LS1 have completely different parking brake setups, so I'm guessing most if not all of the components will not work. I'm not sure how much you need to completely change over to get the LS1 setup to work. Another thing to consider, is that the ABS is different. You're going from 3 channel to 4 channel. Not sure what issues you're going to run into there....

You will need the LS1 e-brake set up and you will need the LS1 brakes, calipers and rotors.

ABS system is 3 channel without TCS, 4 channel is TCS.

I have a LS1 12 bolt to be put into the LT1 car....

Re: switching LT1 rear to LS1 rear

YOU DON'T "NEED" LS1 BRAKES . You CAN use your original LT1 brakes on that diff, all you have to do is pull the axles out and swap the backing plates from your LT1 diff onto the new LS1 diff. Then your LT1 brakes will bolt on like original, and everything will be honky-dory!

I have an LT1 diff in my LS1 car, so I know that this will work. And like Shon Herron said, both diffs are 3-channel if they're from non-TCS cars.

well the LS1 brakes are one of the reasons I am getting this rear. I want it because of the brakes and the gears. The issue is with the parking/emergency brake.

Then you'll need to get the proper LS1 backing plates and parking brake setup (the parking brake has a set of shoes that work as drum brakes.....the "drum" is built into the back of the rotor). You'll probably need the caliper mounting bracket as well? (are you getting the calipers and rotors with the rear end?? )

Then all that you will need is the parking brake cables from an LS1 car.

You'll have backing plates, then caliper mounting brackets that bolt to them, than the calipers. Slap on the rotors and hook up the e-brake cable and lines.
