swap an auto to a standard shift

I have a 1994 Z28 convertible with an automatic trans. The transmission is blown. I have a chance to buy a 1997 standard shift car with everything in tact. I want to swap my auto to standard. Can this be done without getting into crazy stuff. PCM? Electronics? Is it an straight swap. Thanks

Re: swap an auto to a standard shift

It's been done a lot - it is great if you have a complete donor car to see how everything goes. You will have to rewire a couple things like reverse lockout and get the switches in your pedals all working, but it isn't too bad at all. You can get the pigtails on EBAY or various suppliers if you don't want to hack up your donor car's wiring harness. You can do some minor programming in the PCM to switch from A4 to M6 and maybe also program out the 1-4 skipshift, but it is the same PCM between an A4 and M6 (but not between '94-'97). There are a lot of writeups on it if you look around. One thing you might need to consider is your rear gear - if it is a 2.73, that isn't going to be too great with the 6 speed, and even the performance 3.23 gear is too tall. The 6 speeds come with a 3.42 and a lot of those guys went to a 4.10. If you have to do the gear and get the driveshaft spinning faster, you may find it vibrates and may need to buy a new one of those. It's been a long time since I've done a swap so I'm not sure what I've left out (or got wrong, lol), but maybe someone else will have something to add.
