Strengthening the 10-bolt: worth it or no?

Wondering-

I don't yet have the money for a 12-bolt/9", would it be worth buying a stud kit and girdle for the 10-bolt? Or should I just keep it stock, and save up for the stronger rear?

The reason I ask is becuase racenet.net has a package for $450 including studs, girdle, and gears... I wasn't planning on touching the rear, and just saving for a 9", but I thought this was a good deal, and figured I'd ask here first.

that's what I was thinking.

But I'd like to be intercooled and tuned before I start saving for the 9"... I'm a bit torn. Thank you GM for giving us paperweight 7.5" 10-bolt axles!!!

As long as you don't hook up with the supercharger, you shouldn't really have to worry about breaking the rearend. Just be careful.

Don't worry. I'm not hooking at all. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing... lol. She's on a totally stock suspension except for SFCs (if you consider them a suspension mod).

I'm done everything but an aftermarket torque arm and I'm running 400+ to the ground with no fear of ever getting a good bite. My 10 bolt will live forever (or until my turbod 383 is finished).

The saddest thing is that I don't expect better than a 2.2 60' come track time...

I vote you just save for the 9 inch. It's extra weight, but you'll love it!!

A 9" or 12 bolt and a set of slicks will take care of that.

I pulled a 1.84 60 ft on pep boy tires in a t top car with no SFC's, LCA's or brackets. The only thing thats keeping my rear alive is the wheel spin. It's gonna blow and I know it.

I have a girdle and welded the axle tubes, how much that is helping I don't know.

I think I can get mid 1.7's on the 60 after suspension work, I think thats pretty good for regular tires. The pep boy ultra Z's do pretty well, the more you heat them the harder they bite. The car will launch harder now, but it wheel hops so bad the rear view mirror came off and hit me the head sending me into a slide and I almost hit the wall. Damn rear view mirrow

I know it isnt common but my friend RJF_LS1 has repeated 1.6 60 foots on his 10 bolt with an SLP diff and 3.73s on E/T streets. And i have pulled many a 1.8s on my drag radials on my 10bolt with 3.23s. Another friend of mine has gotten 2 years of 1.7s on his 10 with 275 D/Rs. Im going 9-inch too cause this T56 is gonna kill me 10-bolt befor long. Hell who knows I might just throw the 9-bolt out of my IROC in it and see what happens with the 3.27 gears lol. You never know.

I don't think it's worth trying to beef up the stock rear.
