strengthen the stock 10 bolt
strengthen the stock 10 bolt
my car was just tuned and iam finally making a little over 400rwhp iam going to buy a moser 12 bolt, but what can i do right now to strengthen the stock 10 bolt? i have a 6 speed with 373 gears i am gonna buy a ta girdle with stud kit. what else and where do i buy this?? thank you all so much
Re: strengthen the stock 10 bolt
If you don't already have solid pinion spacers, it might be worth the effort to puts some in. The "crush sleeve" as I understand, may crush even more with hard launches which will allow the gears to misalign and become more easily broken. Replacing the crush sleeves with solid spacers eliminates that slipage and ameiliorates the chance that your gears will break because they are misaligned.
Solid shim packs are cheap. You might consider getting some a new crush sleeve to insure the correct thickness needed.
Then again, I may be crazy.

Re: strengthen the stock 10 bolt
there is no point in dumping any money into your 10bolt. At the most i would add a TA girdle then just be gentle on it until you can afford something better like a 12 bolt, 8.8 or 9 inch.
Re: strengthen the stock 10 bolt
The solid pinion spacer may help some. You set the crush sleeve by "crushing" it with torque until the proper clearance and alignment is obtained. When under acceleration, the angle of the gears give the pinion gear a tendency to want to shoot out of the rear end towards the front of the car. If that force is enough to crush that sleeve more, even if by only a few thousandths more, it will throw the pattern of the teeth out enough to cause uneven loading on the face of the teeth... which is what kills the gears because the stresses aren't being distributed evenly on the them.
An auburn carrier, TA rear girdle, and lower ratio gears are about the best way to strengthen the 10 bolt. Lower ratio gears have a smaller number of teeth, so with the gear's diameters, the teeth are thicker and stonger. The main problem is, at 7.5" there isn't enough metal to resist the stresses that high torque and high rpm launches cause. I've seen a few 8.8" rears in the GNs go 9s completely stock, even with the original gears, c-clips, and crush sleeves. When you have more meat, you have more strength... albeit more weight too. But who cares.
