which street gear for daily driver

Hey I have a 95 camaro z28 a4, with full exhaust and cai. I have 3.73 gears waiting to be installed but wondering if I should get 3.42. It's daily driver and don't do too much freeway driving but I want more accelerstion. Will my 275-40-17 tires be alright for the 3.73?

I would use 3.42s but thats just me. Use an rpm calculator like this to figure what you want to be turning at say 70mph.

Re: which street gear for daily driver

Is there a significant gas mileage difference between 3.42 and 3.73? I used the calculator, they seem to be a couple hundred rpm's apart. Will I have good enough traction with the 3.73? I was quoted 250 for the install with the summit brand 3.73 gears. My current gas mileage is usually between 16-18mpg, depending if I drive on the freeway, its higher. What could I potentially be expecting in mileage with 3.73?

Re: which street gear for daily driver

I have used 3.73s in my 93 Camaro A4 from soon after I bought it in Feb of 93. I think it is a perfect street gear. I do have a strong preference for GM gears whether they are from GM parts or sold through aftermarket companies. They have a bevel on the end of the gear that most aftermarket manufactured gears don't have. As a result many aftermarket manufactured gears will whine no matter how well they are installed. The GM made gears don't if they are installed correctly. GM makes way more gears than they sell cars so many aftermarket companies are selling gear sets that were made by GM.

Haven't installed a set in many years but the G in the part number on Motive gears used to mean that Motive had sourced them from GM. Maybe someone that has bought gears recently can tell you who is currently reselling GM production gears.

Edit: I was doing some Google checking and noted in a friends Lingenfelter Camaro blog that he states that Motive changed to the G designation for its aftermarket mfged gears and started using part nos 26014589-10-41 for their Genuine GM gears (at least the 4.10s). No date on the blog but He sold his LPE Camaro in 2001-2002 so it might take some looking to see where you can buy actual GM sourced gears for the 10 bolt.

Also Known as "2 cut" gears. American axle sells these. Very quality gear sets. They can be tricky for first time users since you need to run the backlash tighter than we're used to.
