Strange or Moser 12-Bolt

I guess this is a never-ending question. I have searched and found some answers.

So...Strange or Moser?

My set up will be a 396 with no more than 200hp NOS.

I don't want the 9" because of the locker noise for street driving, and the extra weight.

Which rear with a posi would hold up better....longer? What are you running, and have you had problems?

I blew my stock 10bolt rearend at the track last summer and had to put a moser 12bolt in. It comes with a eaton posi and you have the choice of 30 or 33spline. I'm happy with this rearend. It definitely holds up nice! I think Strange is a little more in price anyway.

Did you have any work to do other than just "bolt" it in? I've heard that you have to pull the axles and press on the bearings, bolt on the brake caliper bracket. And of course, fill it with fluid.

I think the Strange unit is a complete bolt in...no additional work.

Did you have a problem with driveshaft length?

Yeah, the press on bearings was a bit of a pain to put together. And I had to shorten the driveshaft 2 inches. But you might have to shorten the driveshaft with strange too.

From what I userstand the Strange 12 bolts come completeley assembled and the Mosers dont. I for one have decided that when the 10 bolt goes, I'm getting a Strange. Hopefully the 10 bolt will last long enough so I have time to recover from the cost of the A4->M6 swap I'll be starting next month.

I'm confused (as usual). Why would a 9-inch make "locker noise" if you bought one with a limited slip carrier? Yes, they do offer lockers and spools, but they also sell them with limited slips.

That question aside, the Strange is a true plug-and-play, capable of handling 800HP. Just be sure to order it well in advance of when you need it, because their real problem is "delivery". typically takes at least one month. Particularly if you order the "super strength" posi (and you should)... they don't seem to stock them, and have to order them and wait for them to come in.

Mines been providing problem free service for almost 5 years.

Just wanted to let you guys know that Fred is correct when he says you should be prepared to wait after you order it. I ordered one 3 months ago (Dec. 1st) and still have yet to receive it. Strange continues to tell me that they do not have the "super strength" posi unit and that they should have one for me in a couple of weeks. So, make sure that you are willing to wait for it if you are going to order one. My original quote said it should take about 4 weeks. Somehow, 4 weeks turned into 12 weeks.

That stinks. I ordered mine through TByrne...and don't know if they just lit a fire under them or what but I received mine within 1 month.

That is a resounding endorsement Fred that I am so glad to hear. I ordered mine the day after Christmas and it came in ten days ago. I got the spool setup for a race only car though.
