Strange banging noise????

Yesterday I punched it at a stop sign and felt what I would describe as a vibration and heard a banging noise. The car drives fine as long as you drive it mellow but if I punch it from a stop it makes the noise. I've asked a co-worker and he suggested it could be one of these issues in no particular order.

1) Bad driveshaft universal.

2) The limited slip is going bad.

3) You sheared a tooth off the ring or the pinion.

4) The axle C-clips have about had it.

5) The suspension bushings have worn to the point that when you get on it, the entire axle is moving in a way not in line with the designer's intent.

These all sound like possibilites but I was wondering if anybody had any other options or if one of these maybe a starting point to solving the problem. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

A broken trans mount can do that too. Thats how my car acted after my trans mount busted.

It's most likely a tranny mount. It can also be a torrue arm mount. Look at these rubber mounts under the car and you'll probably see that one is torn. These usually sound like a baseball bat hitting the underside of your car when you romp on it.

Re: Strange banging noise????

Yeah, you need to get under your car and start pulling stuff around. My torque arm came loose and felt like something was wacking the bottom of the car right next to my seat. Jacked up the car and started yanking the wheels forward and backward and it became obvious what it was. To check the trans mount just see how much you can move it up and down while everything is bolted up. I installed a poly one and even though there's more vibration there's less flopping around and the drivetrain feels more stable.

is the car 6 speed or A4? if its six speed with a broke tranny mount, you'll notice the shifther moving alot more than it normally does when you accelerate.

Re: Strange banging noise????

if you find some jackstands and a prybar, you can check for a broken tranny mount. while you are under there, look for anything else that might be loose
