what is the stock tranny in an A4 1998 z28 called, not too sure, and what is a good shift kit to buy for a daily driver and what willl it do??

 

The tranny you have is the 4L60E. It's a descendent of the old TH350, which later gained 4th gear (overdrive) and was called the 700-R4, a.k.a., 4L60. The "E" was added to 4L60 when they went fully electronic in around ~93.

As far as shift kits, Trans-go is a popular choice among many on this board, but B&M also makes a good kit (they actually offer 2 kits, 1 being the "shift improver" and 1 being the "trans-pak" ... the Trans-pak is the more complete kit).

Basically you can expect firmer, more crisp shifts with a kit (less slippage during the shift, which is good, because slip creates heat, and heat kills automatics).
