Stock Shifter vs. Hurst?

I am thinking about buying a used hurst shifter for around $40-$50. I dont have a lot of money and definitly dont want to cough up like 150 for a pro.5.0 etc..

Im asking is the hurst shifter really a short throw? Is it an improvment over the stock one? How much of an improvment?

Also, my car is a 96 formula, not sure if it came w/ a hurst but assuming no. Anyway to check?

All aftermarket shifters are an improvement IMO. The stock shifter has a rubber isolator to reduce vibration noise, but it gives the shifter a really mushy feeling. Your 96 didn't come with a Hurst shifter from the factory.

o damn, you get a Hurst and put it in and ditch the stock POS. you will fricken love the hurst. its very different from alot of other cars, and has a very tight and positive feel when shifting. give it about 3 days of driving and you will not want any other one

There are at least 3 different versions of the Hurst.... SLP/Hurst, Hurst Competition + and Hurst Billet +. Each one of those is better than stock, but they are not equal, so you need to know exactly which "Hurst" you are buying.

the hurst is an upgrade but will let more trans noise come through the shifter so if you hear some gear/vibration noise dont be alarmed

Is SLP Hurts + Short Stick a nice combo?

A very nice combo. You'll be pleased. You can probably do most of your shifting with just your wrist after the swap.

Re: Stock Shifter vs. Hurst?

I just had a T56 swapped into my car and I bought an SLP Hurst shifter (the factory Hurst style) off of eBay for $25 shipped. I love it...it feels much better than the stock shifters in the manual cars I've driven. I didn't bother getting a short stick since I don't really care for them...I like having the extra leverage.
