Stock Posi...

Re: Stock Posi...
Mine spins one when making sharp right turns, then locks when straight. two when making left. Always two in forwards or reverse. It's not a posi, it's a limited slip. I don't know why yours only spins 1 though. Maybe yours is broken or something.

Re: Stock Posi...
Sounds like your carrier is on it's way out. Mine was starting to do the same thing so I replaced it last week. Replaced it with a eaton posi and 3.73 gears and wow! what a difference.

Re: Stock Posi...
How hard/expensive is it to swap out an aftermarket posi?
Are they really that much better? What could be better... if they are all supposed to do the same thing.

Re: Stock Posi...
Well the hardest part about swapping posi units is setting up the ring and pinoin afterwards. And even then you just need right tools and time. I believe the Eaton Heavy Duty posi is the popular choice. Supposed to be a quality piece. I thinks its what Moser puts in their 12 bolts.

Re: Stock Posi...
I've got an Eaton with 400# springs in my Impala. Its held up numerous times to hard launches with my spec clutch and T-56 with 4.56 gears and a 4600# curb weight.
IMO take your gears to someone who has been setting up gears for a long while. I tried to set mine up when I put the 4.56's in and didn't get the preload right. I set the pinion depth fine, but the carrier was slapping back and forth. Ended up takign two evenings of my time, and still had to take it to a shop for a day and pay $200 labor.

Maybe this will help you a little,

As for your question on what kind of difference do you feel, no more one wheel burnouts is the biggest difference. I was getting stuck in my gravel driveway because one wheel would get into some loose gravel and spin.
The main reason I went with the eaton posi though was because it is rebuildable. The auburn carriers that come in most of our cars are not. If you have yours replaced go ahead and replace everything in the rear such as wheel bearings, u-joints, seals and might as well get a new ring and pinon. Its not cheap though, expect to pay around 1k for parts and labor.

Re: Stock Posi...
pre '99 posi's are POS! They wear out super fast. You can do [roughly] three levels of upgrade. You can go w/ the SLP takout zexel-torsen posi from '99+ cars, you can go with an aftermarket like an eaton or torsen T2, or you can go w/ the bad boy torsen T2R. If you're on a budget and mostly daily driver I'd go w/ the Zexal-Torsen takeout from SLP. Last I looked $100 plus shipping. Plan on another $100 for a 'delux' install kit including bearings, seals, etc. If you have to pay someone, then an additional $150-$300.
note: the clutch type posi's wear out. some can be rebuilt, some can't (stock auburn). the T2R, for example, is not a clutch type.
There are other opinions out there, these are mine.

Re: Stock Posi...
They call that peg legging. The clutches are probably gone in the posi. Get an Auburn or Eaton and put your ring gear on it. Keep the side shims seperated when you take it apart and put it back together. No need to reset up anything. It will be fine. Use your old carrier brgs if they are not worn out, have a shop press them off the old carrier and onto the new one.Or get new posi kit and have someone build it for you, like taking the carrier to the dealer and say fixit.
