To stall or not to stall?

So I have all the mods in sig and I am still using the stock TC. Can I really benefit from a 3000+ stall while still using my bfg 245/50r16 radials?

I am asking because everyone raves about how a TC should be the first mod but if I can not get traction now then it seems it would just make it worse??? Is this correct?

Someone told me it would help with the drop in rpm between gears at WOT. Hell, I would love that. Is that really true?

Re: To stall or not to stall?

No matter what torque converter you are using, if you blow away the tires, you need suspension work, better gripping tires, etc. Yes, the 9.5" torque converter will keep the engine rpm at WOT shifts from dropping as low as the stock torque converter, which is a good. This though depends a lot on how "tight" the torque converter is setup, how much torque do you have, etc.

Re: To stall or not to stall?

When I did my ported head/CC305 cam swap the best I could get was a 13.0@ 109 with my stock converter on street tires. I installed a 3400 stall and dropped my times to 12.7 on street tires and ET streets down to 12.3 so I definitely it is a worthy mod. All those times were through the stock 3.23s. Before the converter there were certain RPM ranges that the car would lag at. For example cruising down the street at 40 and flooring the car. It would down shift into second but would bog until the RPMS reached 4000 or so. With the stall there was no more bog anywhere, the car felt much quicker from all speeds. That’s my experience hope it helps.

Re: To stall or not to stall?

Thxs for the replys. I bought a midwest 3200-3400 lockup stall from another member today to try out. He says its has a 9" stator and a 12" clutch. No idea what that really means but anything got to be better than stock. I was going to install it now since my M6 rebuilt/swap is going to be a longer winter project.
