Stall or Gears help...

Well i did a little bit of a search and didn't really find much of what i was looking for.
i've been thinking about adding something to my car lately but can't really decide on what IF anything.

I was thinking about getting gears at 1st. A board member has some GM 3.73's for 115 shipped. (if he still has them) But i also found a Vig. 3200 stall thats local. (brand new in box for 620 1 free restall)

My car is mostly a street car i don't take it to the track that much. It is my daily driver. mods are in sig.

I've also read that some people don't see any gain with gears so i was just thinking about getting the stall and adding a tranny cooler.

Question is tho should i go with the stall, i was looking for a 3000 or 2800 stall but will a 3200 be that much different, or should i just but it and get it restalled to what i want, also should i go ahead and spend that much money or just go with a cheaper stall??

I would like to switch out my tranny to a m6 if i ever get the chance but that will possibly only happen if my tranny goes out, or i get good enough to do it myself. Also don't know how long i plan on keeping this car, might upgrade to an ls1 once i get out of school.

1st is a stall useless to me without running slicks or will it still be some use on street tires and how bout from a stock and roll. I might be planning on camming it with later on with ported heads if my friends dad will do them for cheap if not free.

I felt alot of gain when I switched from 3.23's to 3.73's in my car. I thought it made the car more fun to drive.

I'd go for the gears with a stock converter on a street car. But you will need to reprogram your PCM for the new gears if you go that route.

If you are looking for a performance gain, then the torque converter will give you more than a rear end gear change. I have never seen a .4-.6 tenths drop from a gear change, but I have from a change to a higher stall quality torque converter change.

Well, I did cut .4 seconds off my time going from 2.73 --> 4.10 gears, BUT, I don't know if it was all to do with the gears, because I also got new tires that hook really well, and I think I could have done better times even with 2.73's and these tires.

The 4.10's are pretty fun to drive (at certain speeds) but surprisingly have as many or more dead spots than the 2.73's had.

If you want acceleration gains, I think a stall will still complement the 2.73's, and with a lock-up converter, you won't lose any highway mileage like you WILL with lower gears.

.......just speaking from my experience with gears.

Re: Stall or Gears help...

sweet well the stall is a lock-up and i already have 3.23's. I'm just worried about my tranny going out anytime soon. If it does go out and then i replace it with a m6 (as i really want a m6) won't the converter pretty much be just a waste of my time.

And is a t/c going to cut that much off my time if im using street tires?

Like when you launch your car do you HAVE to leave at whatever the t/c is set at?
