Stall and Gears

I am new to picking stall and stuff. I was wondering what stall speed is just too much for daily driving I mean it is kinda opinion based but How should I pick a converter? And the gears? I think I want 3.73 but how will this affect MPG and freeway cruising? Thanks for your help doods!

Re: Stall and Gears

if you plan on staying bolt ons or a mild cam, go with a 2800 stall and 3.42's. if you drive on the highway, i would stick to 3.42's. i loved 3.42's and 2800 stall in a hotcam car on stock heads. loved it. i'd say no more than a 3200 and 3.42's. you'll be happy.

Re: Stall and Gears

I have 2800 9.5" Edge and 3.42s in my Caprice and still get 22-3mpg with mixed favoring highway and 18 or so with mixed favoring city, that is with a small cam stock manifolds and a 27" tire being the important variables, obviously this car weightsa tad more than yours so I think it safe to say you should exect at least this good a results.

Re: Stall and Gears

I'd strongly recommend a PI Vigilante 2800 (actually flashes more to 3100-3200 FYI ) combined with some GM 3.42 or 3.73 gears (if you're going to change, go w/ 3.73's) on Nitto DR's for the street/strip. Great combo for a daily driver, yet awesome performance at the dragstrip.

Sure, gas mileage will be affected a little with the 3.73's due to the higher rpms on the highway, but the torque converter won't change it any at those speeds since it locks up a little after 40mph just like the stock one does...

Good luck,

Mike

P.S. Don't forget to get a good quality tranny cooler as well (B&M).

Re: Stall and Gears

PI makes a good converter BUT they are NOT CUSTOM like an Edge or Yank hence the way it doesn't stall where it is rated to. A suprizing number of b-body guys are actually ditching PI/Vig in favor of the less expensive Edge and going faster doing so because the converter is truely built to your cars needs not off the shelf. As far as the cooler my Edge ran fine with evewn just an in radiator cooler no external cooler just an external filter. I did end up adding a cooler but since I knew it was unnecessary I went with a TruCool with a viscosity based bypass feature that stops overcooling B&M sells these exact same coolers as well the bypass thermostatic like feature will be in the description look for one of those coolers if you decide to put one in.

There are oinly like 2 tranny cooler makers so don't get hung up on brand find one at a reasonable price with the appropriate features, if you look into Edge they have a division which handles things like shift kits and coolers.
