Stall converter questions

Got a 02 Z28 thats stock, planning on modding it later, what stall speed should i get and is it necessary to install a tranny cooler if you install a higher stall converter?

Re: Stall converter questions

Get a 2800-3200 Vigilante (good for stock) and when you mod it later you can send it back for a restsall, I think they offer a 2 year free restall. I had their 2800 stall on my car for 6 years. I've ordered a new 3600 and the 2800 will go on the Impy.

Re: Stall converter questions

I generally agree with the above post wrt stall speed and certainly would not recommend higher for a stock motor. My own sugesstion would be for a little lower if it's purely for street use. I have no experience with Vigilante, though they do have a good reputation. And yes, you need a tranny cooler if you are installing a high stall converter.

Well the best way I can describe it is like if you had a manual and you cruise with half clutch depressed, your rpm will be higher while driving until the lockup is applied. A loose converter will cause the shifts to be softer and that’s a reason why a shift kit is recommended. I’ve done the transgo kit at the same time and there are certain different things that apply to a high stall. As Rich mentioned, a cooler is a must for street use. About that rearend, don’t bother with it now, it will survive longer in an A4 especially if you don’t hard launch on slicks, really the only way to improve it is to 12 bolt it
