something in rear leaking

i have a question. i got as far under my z as i could without a jack, to look at my exhaust, and noticed something depositied on my floor. looked up and the rear axle had something on it. i looked as best i could and noticed it was comming from above. i plan to jack the car up tomorrow and check it out. any ideas befor i get into it? the reason why i was looking at my exhaust is because i am replacing my stock with the catback slp lm. anyhow it is a 94 z. any help would be appreciated, i am not exactly a wrench. i havent really looked to hard but anyone know what gears were put in these?

These cars are notorious for pinion seal leaks. Thats the front seal on the differential.

defintly worth fixing, the pinion seal itself from a GM dealer is like 17$. you dont wanna dry up your rear end and have it lockup on you now would you? .. its only gonna get worse

Re: something in rear leaking

ok well i got er jacked up and ready to install my exhaust when i get it tomorrow. anyhow i got a chance to look at the leak in the rear. i noticed that the leak was actually comming from the drain plug. also i noticed that where the two axles have some build up on them, where they come out from the pumpkin??, but nothing bad. i will probably remove the drain plug and add some tefflon. and replace. everything else looks good.
