So I busted my rear end..

Hey guys, haven't posted on here in a long time..

The other day driving through Philly my rear started making some crazy grinding niose, virtually out of nowhere. Got home okay and inspected it and i sheared two teeth of the pinion. So I was going to try to do this replacement myself but I wanted to know what I was getting myself into.

Is it as simple as replacing the ring and pinion or am I probably going to have to replace the differential as well? And what exactly am I getting into with replacing the gears anyways? Im currently looking for a write up but I haven't found one yet and I figure it is going to cost a lottt to take it to a shop.

Any info would be really helpful thanks guys

a friend of mine is a mechanic, you have to shim the ring and pinion to make sure everything lines up right and i found it easier and cheaper to buy a used rear from someone on here, im selling my rear with 3.42s in it now for 250, send me a pm if interested

Re: So I busted my rear end..

from your sig,you're A4,2800 stall,3.73 gears.
are you 3 channel ABS or 4 channel ABS & TC ?
if you want to stay with 3.73s',rebuild is necessary.
if you're willing to accept 3.23s'/3.42s',it'll be much more inexpensive to pick up a complete used rearend and swap it in. just have to be cautious that a rearend is same channel as what you have now.

Re: So I busted my rear end..

Been down this road before... originally my car had 3.42's, nothing wrong with the rear. Wanted 3.73s, so spent about $400 on the gears/kit/fluids. Also, about 8hours of labor to install myself. Had the carrier out at least 10 times before i had proper lash/gear pattern. Would have been easier to remove the entire rear and do it on the bench vs climbing under the car so many times and limited workspace. After putting about 500miles on it, i regretted not getting 4.10s (6spd car). Read enough breakage stories to convince myself to get a Dana60 with 4.10s... I'm absolutely satisfied now.

If your going to beat on the car, just go with a 9" or S60 swap and save yourself money/time. If your in a pinch, go with a good used 3.42 rear, and do the R&R yourself (not that hard). You can probably find something in your location around $150-$250. There is NO demand for LTX stuff in my neck of the woods, i had my entire rear with the 3.73s for sale for $100 for months and had NO interest. Ended up parting it out and got my 100 eventually.
