Slave cyl. woes!

Okay... about 2 weeks back I was driving to work and the clutch (when depressed) was making this chatter noise; like an air hammer.... then it started having problems going into gear.. this only lasted 2 or 3 minutes (about 1 mile) on my way to work before it locked up when I shifted into 2nd gear and the clutch pedal got hard as a rock. I stood on the pedal while turning the key and the slave cyl actually seperated back where the hydraulic line enters it and fluid went everywhere, but the car started and in gear, I couldn't get any clutch grab, just constant chatter/air hammer.

I replaced the slave cyl today w/ one from NAPA and the install was a breeze really, I bled the system per the GM repair manual and I thought everything went fine, until I tried to start the car and once again, the clutch pedal is HARD AS A ROCK... I can push down on it, but I don't want to blow another slave cyl. in the process.

WHAT GIVES??!!

I was thinking maybe the slave shaft wasn't lining up properly and seating in the clutch fork thing, but that's my old guess...??

Any help guys!??

i think i know cuz it happened to me. if you did everything right and filled the slave w/ brake fluid before attaching the line, then i think you did not seat the rod ball in the cup. if it misses the cup, then you bolt it up and start pressing the clutch, the rod can over extend and you get the rock hard pedal.

i had to put a finger into the cup and a finger on the ball and guide it in real slowly until i was positive it was seated. then pushed it in and bolted it up. i just had to add a little to the reservior to top up and everything was fine.

so that exact thing happened to you? Because what I'm getting from another guy I talked to about it said that the throwout bearing/bushing may need replaced.

I was skeptical whether or not the slave rod was in the cup of the clutch fork or not when I reinstalled the 2nd time after the plastic retainer thing didn't break evenly on both sides... I wonder if that was a sing in itself..... I had to remove the slave halfway through the process and snip the other side of the plastic retainer and then re-bleed the system and reinstall, and I was thinking I'd miss the cup on the fork... I bet I did....

Good call, that'll be first to check up on. I think I'll use some kind of offset screwdriver to help guide it in correctly
