the skip shift light
Re: the skip shift light
Do a search for "skip shift". When you are at part throttle it will automatically shift to 4th gear, and you won't able to shift to anything unless you apply more throttle. You can get something to get rid of it so you can shift naturally, or you can make your own. A search will reveal more.
Re: the skip shift light
Just to clarify... it doesn't "automatically" shift anything in the M6. When you manually shift it, it blocks 2nd gear, allowing you to move only to 4th. If you bought your car used, and you don't feel anything blocking 2nd gear when you are at low load/part throttle, the previous owner may already have defeated the skip shift solenoid.

Thanks for clarifying.

Re: the skip shift light
pretty sure it only blocks 2nd gear.
it's a real pain in the ***.
oh and a side note. even if the "skip shift" is bypassed with an aftermarket unit...the light will still come on the dash. i know i've seen people ask about that.
if you see that light and you havnt noticed anything wierd about trying to shift to 2nd gear...consider yourself lucky...skip shift sucks

Yes, 3rd gear is available. Before i eliminated my skip shift, i used to go to 3rd gear instead of fourth.
I believe teke184 meant to say it only blocks 2nd gear and he is correct
Re: the skip shift light
Before I installed the resistor my '02, I'm pretty sure both second and third were blocked when the light was on.
You can go to 5th or 6th... but I wouldn't recommend it.
It should never come into play when you're racing.
You can get the light disabled with a mail-order tune, among other options. Personally, I like the light.

I can't remember whether it blocked 2nd or 2nd and 3rd.... I thought it was possible to just flip it up into 3rd, but that was so long ago, I can't remember. I bought the car new in August 1994. Two weeks later the skip shift solenoid was unplugged.
For the last 5/6 years, I've been running a TH400 with an aftermarket ECU for the engine..... my stock PCM is still there for the VSS and IAC, and the "skip shift" light on the dash still comes on.
If you disconnect the skip shift light you get yet another code. Best thing to do is simply go into the PCM and change the "enable" and "disable" parameters to the skip shift is never activated.
