Skip Shift Eliminator
Skip Shift Eliminator
I have been reading some of the past posts and it was great to hear I can eliminate the Skip Shift feature with an aftermarket piece or a do it yourself .50 resistor.
What I am curious to know is whether or not anyone has decided to live with this feature despite the many post to get rid of it. Now that I know about shifting from first to fourth when this light comes on, I am trying to see if there is any advantage to this feature. To me it is uncomfortable since the car feels and sounds like its in the wrong gear.
I am also assuming that if I do decide to make the modications, I can still decide to jump to fourth whenever the light does come on. Is this true?

Re: Skip Shift Eliminator
I drove with it for a few months before installing the disabler.
I don't miss it at all. It's nothing but a nuisance, IMO. I didn't even notice a difference in mileage with it deactivated.
The light doesn't matter anymore. You can shift to whatever gear you want to whenever you feel like it (within the limits, of course.)
I don't see why you'd ever want to recreate the 1st to 4th thing, though.

i did the resistor trick, 2.2k ohm.. you will LOVE it!! I normally shift 1-3-5 as said above. Still get the light but its so nice not having it! There is an intersection on my way to work that you have to pull out slowly making a left and going up a hill.. it starts out flat but starts to go up hill right were it would force me to go into 4th.. SUCKED!! its $.99 for like 5 or 6 resistors.. well worth it!

My syncros are going bad in 2nd and 3rd gears, so i actually get the rpms up to 3k, when skip shift has gone off, and then shift to 4th. I don't have any problems with it that way.

Thanks everyone for your input. When I got my Z28, I had to have the M6 option. However I had been driving an automatic for over 10 years and the first standard I drove was only 4 gears. I haven't thought about the shifting sequence 1-3-5 or 1-2-4. Bare with me I am relearning all of this and only had my car for a few weeks. So as you all can imagine, I have been carefully shifting through all the gears, having slow take offs and getting smoked at the light by everyone.
Give me a few more weeks though, and I'll make my fellow Z owners proud.
I will most likely opt for the skip shift mod unless in the next few months I have been able to work around it.
Thanks Again.

Have had my car for little over a month now.
It was driving me crazy at first, but now I've learned to live with it and get around it. The only time it still bites me in the *** is when driving in town and taking off very slow, having to still run out 1st gear over 2.5 to avoid the shift. I'm used to never staying in 1st too long so sometimes I shift before the 2.5k mark and it does it.
One day I'll probably opt for the mod but right now I would rather spend my money elsewhere.

Using the 2.2k ohm resistor trick is really really easy. It doesn't do any harm to your car, it costs like 99 cents for a pack of 6, and it takes all of 5 mins to install.

Using the part from the internet is a whole lot easier than buying the resistor! My buddy did the resistor thing and it works the same, just took him 30 minutes to do instead of 30 seconds. I dunno about the whole "living with it" thing, man that stupid 1st to 4th thing is a pain in the freakin butt!
its worth it to do the mod, those of you that live with it, have you driven someones who has the mod done? It was the first thing I did, and I was stupid to pay 30 bucks for it, but I didin't know anybetter. The other ways to get around the skip shift either slow you down or put extra wear on the car. Anyone who has an M6, does anybody (besides the guy who has syncro probs) actually take advantage of skip shift? No, hardly anyone does. GM did so they could produce numbers to save us from the gas guzzler tax! Thats why most people disable it, It doesn't hurt the car at all, and just makes driving the car more fun, and quicker by not having to take the time to bypass. I don't know about you, but the first couple times I couldn't get into 2nd or gear when I wanted to pissed me off so much. just my .02
