Should I get a shift kit to go along with my Torque Converter?
Should I get a shift kit to go along with my Torque Converter?
I just bought a Super Yank 3500 Stall Converter and I was wondering when i get it put in should i get a shift kit put in at the same time? Also is it safe trusting a place like Lee Myles to put in a shift kit? They're a chain of transmission shops in my area. Thanks

You should definately get a shift kit. Trans-go is what I went with and I could not be happier with it. It might cost a lot for installation though, you might want to check into that. I had mine installed when I had my tranny rebuilt, so it wasnt bad.
I dont know anything about that tranny shop chain.

Get a tranny cooler also. Because.
... well because the tranny will REALLY start to heat up without one. Certain and soon death is the unavoidable future without one. It should be considered a package, like a new oil filter with new oil.
Part-throttle shifts will become very squishy / soft without a shift kit, if you have a TC. They also increase strength and durability of the tranny. Neck-snapping full throttle shifts, too (oh yeah). Good money spent for the price. It's not required, but because you're asking about it, you seem to probably care enough to want it.
To sum it up, the only thing I know about tranny shops is that AAMCO does very low quality work. A friend's (not a f-body) car was worked on. When they removed the console, they spilled the ashtray in the floor and didn't even bother to clean it up (but did replace the ashtray in place). Who knows what they do to the parts you can't see?

Re: Should I get a shift kit to go along with my Torque Converter?
Thank you for all the feedback guys. I will definitely get a tranny cooler. I spoke to a shop that specializes in LS1's but they gave me a good deal that I will take them up on (Prices for work like this in New York are expensive i've looked around). They broke it down like this for me...
Installation $300
Fluids $20
B&M Supercooler plus installation $90
Transgo shift kit plus installation $320
Comes out to $730 but I'm sure it's well worth it.
Someone told me to go with a Permacool because the B&M Supercool isn't a good cooler. I've heard lots of people using them does anyone think I should go with the Permacool instead? If anything i was thinking of eventually hooking up a small fan to the cooler. My car runs pretty cool and I can hear the high speed fans on a lot with the tuning I have. Freescan shows 180-185 degrees almost all the time.
Thanks again guys.
