short throw shifter

ok, i'm a little confused. if you buy a short throw shifter, do you put your old shift rod back on or what? the ws6 store sells a short shifter(just the rod) and the slp and 5.0 shifters. i don't really want the "stick" to be lower i just want quicker shifts. thanks

Re: short throw shifter

Shifters usually come with new rods, but not the **** (you transfer your **** to the new shifter). Some guys like the shifting rod short. Lou's Short Stick is a common rod that can replace the rod that comes with the shifter. The Pro 5 rod has a long threaded portion that can be cut back to shorten that rod.

The stock rod is "part of the problem" as it has a rubber isolator near the bottom of the rod that gives the shifter a mushy feeling.

Short throw = a shorter (lower) stick. Quicker shifts are 1. up to your technique and 2. a more precise shifter. OBE1 95Z28 is telling you something about the reason for imprecise shifts from the factory shifter. The isolastic stick sacrifices precision shifting in order to eliminate vibration and buzzing coming up from the drive train. If you go with an aftermarket shifter, you will have more precise shifts but may (as I have) experience slight or moderate buzzing coming up through the transmission into the car's interior.

BTW, a shorter stick will give you quicker shifts because you will move the stick a shorter distance. It is a fulcrum principle. A short lever means that you move the opposite end more quickly with proportionately more effort.
