Shifting in an Automatic
Shifting in an Automatic
Hey everyone..i have a question, i have heard two different sides to this question..Lets say im sitting at a light and this guy wants to race me..(i know street racing not smart but just saying).I drop it down into first, and then shift to 2nd about 5K, then shift to drive at about 3500, then OD..at about 3K...will this destroy my trans? i heard that some people say it will...some say it wont.
Also what about everyday driving, and i drive it like its stick 1st to 2nd to D to OD...will that mess up the trans? im not talking about like redlining it then shifting...like shifting at about 3K...Will this screw it up?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it has been bothering me, and i was just wanting to know the best possible answer.
THANKS ALOT EVERYONE

That's OK unless you're decelerating in the lower gears,if you do that enough you can get ready to replace the overrun clutch like mine needs. All of the sudden you wont have any engine braking in low and 2nd and maybe 3rd but I haven't tried that yet since I'm now babying mine untill I can go in the trans.
drive in D? why?
only time i shift it into D or 2nd is when i'm about to stomp on someone...other than that, OD is good enough.
oh yeah...some ppl like to drive in D cause it makes their exhaust louder...as for me, i'd rather the cops say "there he goes," not "here he comes."

I build automatic transmissions for a living, and I usually shift my 700 ('93Z) manually (Unless I'm tryting to eat a Whopper from BK at the time).
I shift it at 6200 RPM's in 2nd and 3rd at the track...Don't need 4th...Even with the 4.10's. I drive the car around town in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. The only time I use 4th is when I'm cruising at 65+, on the highway.

edit, is there anything you can do to an auot tranny to make it shift when you shift? because really, you're just setting the limit on which gear it will shift into automatically on a stock tranny. I've shifted manually a couple times and you have to time it right so you don't hit the rev limiter (as it takes a second or two to actually shift)

If you're bumping the limiter, you either need to raise it, or do some governor work in the transmission.
Wanna buy my old Hypertech chip? It went 12.82 @ 105.9 MPH in a completely stock motored '93 Z...With exhaust manifolds!
