Shifter Indicator problem - Stops in the middle of numbers..

What would cause the Shift Indicator to be off (stopping in the middle of two indicators for example?)

I noticed that (coincidentally after a mechanic touched something under the hood) that the Console shifter seems to have more play that other parts and infact stops in the MIDDLE of some indicators.. Example:

P - LOCKS dead in place.. = Perfect
R - LOCKS dead in place.. = Perfect
N - LOCKS dead in place.. = Perfect
(D) - Stops quite frequently in the middle of "N" and "(D)". Rather than LOCKING in place, I can easily tap the shifter and it will move forward and back between the indicators of "N" and "(D)" enough to be right in the middle of them two.

"D" "2" & "1" all the same way.. Don't stop and STAY in the locked position..

What would cause this?? Loose cable? Badly adjusted Throttle cable?

If it is only the indicator and not the shifter, you probably need to take the indicator apart and clean it. Spilled soft drinks will make it stick.
