shift linkage shot?

ok I can't shift my car any more. I've got a 94 formula with the 4L60E. heres what I know so far:

you can shift the car from underneath by pulling on the linkage. How far you can bring the selector back depends on how far the shifter is back in the car. If the shifter is in park, you arent moving it. If the shifter is in 2nd, you can go from P-R-N-D-2 but not back into 1.

the shifter itself will move the gears FORWARD but not BACK. I can go from 1 to 2, but not 2 to 1.

I tore apart my whole console, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong from up there.

I haven't a clue as to what is causing it to do this. I am 99% sure its the shift linkage and not the transmission but I can't see anything. Anyone else have the same or similar problem that can help me out here? Please oh please tell me I don't have to drop the transmission!

I'm going crazy without my car this 89 deville just isn't cutting it!
and on a side note, I found $5+ worth of change buried in and around my console.

it's cable operated. And the cable is probably broken.
