Servicing Trans And Rear end

Ok ,so I know when to change the engine oil and filter but when do you service the A/T and the rear end?The car has just over 40,000 miles.

Rule of thumb, is 50,000 to 60,000m. A little more if using synthetics. Someware in your owners manual there an actual number.

yeah, now is good time to change those fluids. To have the transmission flushed now would be one of the best things you can do for it other than adding a transmission cooler. They are inexpensive and according to legend, lowering those temps by 20 degrees will double the life.

If you have the money to spend, it wouldn't hurt anything to have the rear end oil changed out either. I envy you, you have a terrific car with low miles.

Thanks. I'm going to have the work done.Just trying to figure out if synthetics is worth the money for trans and rear end.

Re: Servicing Trans And Rear end

it is said that synthetics in the tranny are slightly louder...this has something to do with the dino fluid having more noise dampening ability. I personally noticed very little difference, but each tranny is different. If you dont have noise now, I doubt going to a synthetic would affect it. Synthetics are supposed to hold up better than standard fluids, and they are less prone to breakdown due to heat.

For as little as you change the fluids, I say why not go with synthetic? per mile, it isnt THAT much more at all.

Re: Servicing Trans And Rear end

Synthetics are a waste in the rear end of most street or strip cars. The rear end never gets real hot in these uses. Road racing would be another matter. With an auto tranny, heat is again the issue. Putting high power through the trans/converter will generate a lot of heat. Drag use isn't an issue if there is a cool down between runs (and a good tranny cooler). Ditto for normal street use. So, unless you drive it hard for long periods, with the tranny as well it may be a waste. But trannys do run closer to the edge (i.e. hotter) than the rear end will. So, if you must spend the $$$ on synthetics I'd do the tranny before the rear end.

My own philosophy is to use dino juice in everything and change frequently, at least in the case of an auto tranny or the engine. The rear end I don't give mch thought to and I have NEVER had a lubrication related issue in a rear end. If I still road raced though, it would be a different thing.
