Serious Drivetrain Noise, Please Help !!!

OK, I dont even know where to start...

I've been having a whine noise of which I THOUGHT was gear noise....

Well Today I decided to take it out for a lil bit....

It whines like no other, LOUD !!

I got on it pretty good, 1'st into 2nd made the tires CHIRP...

Now its like clunk clunk clunk, almost like my exhuast pipe is hitting the yoke or something, the faster you go the LOUDER IT GETS !!! I can feel the vibertations in the stick shift and it sure as hell sounds like the tranny to me. How can I tell what it is and where its coming from ?? The car seems to still move fine without stress to it, and also it only makes these noises when you get on the gas, not if u let off the gas pedal or if you put it in neutral...

PLEASE HELP WANT TO FIX THIS ASAP

THANKS !

Sounds like the rear end to me. If I were you, i'd pop the rear cover off and inspect the ring and pinion and make sure you didn't break them. Mine did the same thing with a set of Richmonds after a hard shift one day. Noisy and vibrated but got it home. Pulled the cover off and 2 of my pinion gear teeth were laying in the bottom of the diff. Your just gonna have to get under there and inspect some things. U-joints and stuff also.

I work at a auto dealership, small used autos... anyways we have a service dept as well. Last weekend I used the lift to change my tranny fluid and rear end fluid.. Everything LOOKED good in the rear, but when test driven the service manager said it was defiently the rear end...

Would you feel this in the shifter even though its the rear end ???

I just hope it IS the rear and NOT the transmission, I can still shift fine and it drives fine, just when on the gas pedal, light or soft your get the clunk clunk clunk and you can feel it, VERY LOUD PITCHED NOISE AS WELL... BUT STOPS IF YOU LET OFF THE GAS OR PUT IN NEUTRAL...

Still sound like my rear end ???

Thanks for answering so quick !!

PS: I HAVE 4.10 GEARS IF IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE !!!

My guess would be when you take the diff apart you will find a broken pinion tooth.

How come last weekend it had a whine noise real bad, BUT no broken parts ??

The magnet had some metal shavings, but I believe that is/was normal ??

Thanks

Yes, noises and vibrations in the rear will travel right up the driveshaft which makes driveline noises and vibrations hard to pin point. I think the reason why you had a whine and no vibrations is becaue your backlash was way off, but no broken parts, YET. Hard shifts can easly start breaking teeth if your gears aren't set up properly. Thats what happend to me. I knew my backlash was out. Raced an import one night, pounded a good 2 to 3 shift, and all of a sudden, noise and vibration. I smoked the dude (hehehe), but broke teeth on the pinion gear. I'm with snake, I think you might have broke a tooth or two back there. Pull your cover and start spinning your tires and inspect the ring gear. If you broke them off the pinion, you should find them laying at the bottom of your diff or in the fluid that comes out when you pull the cover. Let us know what happens.

Will do Ken,

I am already in the mist of location a stock 3.42 rear end for quick replacement, I've already been through a 3.73 and 4.10 rear... This is to much for me, lol I need a 12 bolt !

Thanks for the replies !!

Re: Serious Drivetrain Noise, Please Help !!!

Been there broh. First set of 3:73 richmonds installed by a guy I knew, but not set up correctly. Burned up in a year. Second set of 3:73 richmonds broke 2 pinion teeth after about a year and a half. Then put in a set of 4:10 motives. Great gears and were still in there when I sold the rear. Figured with an M6, Street Twin, ET streets, and launching on a 150 shot at above 3000, i'd better put a 12 bolt in before I do that. Didn't break anything, but oops, forgot to upgrade to the billet steel front yoke on the drive shaft. That oops cost me twisted splines in the yoke. Maybe I should just upgrade to the Viper output shaft now before going to the track again.

I brought my car to my job last night on the flatbed... Got it up on the lift, just spinning the wheels in neutral, you get a clunk / clunk/ clunk and I can FEEL it at the tail shaft of the tranny /front of the driveshaft... Would I still feel it up here if it was at the rear ?? I just dont wanna pop the cover again if I dont have to.... CONFUSED AS ALL HELL HERE KEN !!!

Re: Serious Drivetrain Noise, Please Help !!!

Hard to say. Technically, your still connected to the pinion, but your just at the other end of the driveshaft. What I would do is pull the driveshaft, cause thats a quick thing to do, and then spin the pinion yoke in the rear end, or spin the tires while your holding the pinion yoke and see if you can feel or hear anything. If you still did, that would rule anything out from the driveshaft up. While the driveshaft is off, make sure your U-joints are good too. Make sure theres no slop in them and they move freely. Hope the suggestions help. I know what you mean about the rear cover too. Pain in the butt. I found out yesterday after getting my new shaft from Denny that I still have my noise back there, so now I have to pull the cover today and start inspecting. Not what I would have expected from a moser 12 bolt after only 4 passes.

Re: Serious Drivetrain Noise, Please Help !!!

No problem. It was actually an Eaton part that broke and not Moser's. But looks like Eaton is just gonna send a new posi unit. Waiting to see what happens.

Re: Serious Drivetrain Noise, Please Help !!!

I keep hearing about people breaking things in the Moser rearends...maybe it's just me but I haven't had one Strange 12 bolt that I've installed. Weird... But back to the issue at hand, it definately sounds like the rearend is done. You may want to get a new limited slip while you're at it...Could also be an answer to the Clunk you hear coming from back there.
