Scared for my A4

This is what I am looking at for my A4 96 Z.

Match ported heads and intake, new springs (110k on the motor but does not leak or burn a drop), 1.6 RR's, LT's and ORY to go with my magnaflow, more tuning from MADZ, have a Racetronix pump with clean stock injectors, and NGK TR-6 plugs. Was going to spray a 150 wet shot but am thinking on a 175 with timing pulled and race gas. Also have 3.42's, some suspension work, and will have M/T E.T. Streets and skinnies on a 15 inch pro star, oh stock cam.

The tranny was a GM rebuild before I got it and it only has about 15k on it and I was thinking about taking it in and have the coolant flushed and replaced before I took it to the tack. Should I fear for its life past a 150 shot or would I be ok on a 175?

Re: Scared for my A4

It could go either way...

I have seen guys running bolt-on's and spray for 1 run and blow the tranny and also have seen some live a few months... But either way that much through a stock 4l60e is asking for failure...

You might be fine for awhile. It is usually a good 60' that kills the a4, not shear power. Take it alittle easy off the line and you might be fine.

fyi porting the heads without doing a cam swap wont gain you to much. While your in there you should consider doing a cam.

The stock input sprag, front support, and output shafts are areas for potential catastrophe. You'll probably cook the 3-4 clutches before you break any hard parts, though. The forward pistons are known to crack, also.

Re: Scared for my A4

I was jut going to clean up the heads because I am going with new springs and all.
I only plan to spray it at the track and will not be going every week.

I am seriously thinking about building a TH-400.

I have some big M/T E.T.'s going on and am not worried about a bad 60 even with the stock converter.

The car is sick in first even spinning on bad street tires.....

I might just build a 400 and sell the stocker in one peice hahaha.

I would look into getting a pro race rebuild from frank at ctp. I just really like having the overdrive. Then you can run 4.10s and still drive it justfine on the highway.

A 400 will slow you down, and you lose overdrive...Not to mention the fact that they're completely unneccassary unless you're rinning deep in the 9's.

The problem is cost, most rebuild cost I have seen for mine are around the 1k mart, a whole lot cheaper for a 400.
I rarley drive my car on the highway.

But then again as far as i know you need a new driveshaft for a 400 so I might spend the same in the end...

Why chance it play it safe bro. If you have a perfectly good trans that is running fine and isnt built for that kinda power dont do it untill you are ready for a rebuild, or a new trans.

Re: Scared for my A4

you'll need alot more then just a dshaft for the th400 swap. Ive just started looking into it, and so far you'll need a dshaft, crossmember with either a TA mount or a custom TA. you'll also need a stall, shifter, rewire the reverse lights and neutral safety switch, and electronic speedo swap for the th400.

ofcourse, some of that stuff you'll want either way to spray that much power through an auto trans. maybe you should just dial back the spray to like 100 or 125? Im just goin to avoid hooking up my nitrous till I get a rear axle, and either spend the cubic tons of cash to build the A4 to handle it or pay all the money for the th400 swap stuff.

$1400 is considered "cubic tons of cash"? I can build you a 4L60E that'll handle more than what you guys are throwing at one for that much.

Re: Scared for my A4

If you think a built 4L60E costs "cubic tons of cash", then I'd like to know what you consider the cost of a TH400 swap. I gaurantee Frank's Race or Pro Race will do the trick much cheaper and easier.

I've had mine in for 5 months and it has consistently taken everything I can throw at it, just like Frank told me it would.

Re: Scared for my A4

yes, to me $1400 is alot for a trans. now, I dont think its too much for what you get, but its still alot of money nonetheless. and as Ive stated, by the time you buy all the parts nec. to swap in a th400, and pay for the transmision, its damn close. plus ofcourse you lose the overdrive and steep 1st gear ratio.

actually frank, your one of the fella's I was goin to email about my own trans. situation. but it doesnt look like (from your site) you sell parts. only complete trans.s. now, I cant afford $1400 plus shipping, pluss hard parts, but I can assemble a transmision im sure with a manual. so Im goin to try it myself. Im goin to write my own post so as not to take over this guys post.
