Ring and Pinion Install Question

I had the diff cover off my car the other day while I was changing the fluid and I noticed some kind of speed sensor mounted on the ring gear, probably the VSS. My question is how is that mounted to the ring gear? Is it bolted, pressed, and do they usually come off in one piece. Anyone run into this before?

It isn't for VSS, it's for ABS.. I haven't removed one[yet] but I know you can buy one for about 20-30 bux.. It appears to be the size of the ring gear.. I believe[ not positive] it goes under that and is held on by it..

Yeah, that's the reluctor wheel for the ABS sensor. If you're simply changing ring & pinion though, you don't need to take it off.

You can replace all the bearings without taking that off. It's built onto the carrier, and the bearings go on the outsides of the carrier.
