Re: Ring and Pinion Help

First thing you should do is buy the installation kit from summit racing since it supplies all new bearings and what not. It also wouldn't be a bad a idea to pick up a couple extra crush sleeves because damaging them is easy. But other than that if you have never installed them before do it very carefully because it is very easy to screw something up if they arent installed properly..

Re: Ring and Pinion Help

well if you have never set up gears before have a shop do it, its not a bolt on like doing headers or throttle body, there are a lot of precision measurements, pinion bearing pre-load, diff case bearing pre-load, pinion depth, checking the gear contact pattern

i have done many sets of gears and rear end build up's, if you know how and have the correct tools it can be very easy

Re: Ring and Pinion Help

ill tell ya this is not an easy task but any one CAN do it with a little determination
Def get that install kit it comes with all the stuff you will need
tools ya need that ya prolly dont have are a dial indicator and magnetic base and calipers
as well as a shop press to press on the bearings
here is a nice guide i found that helped me through my install
http://www.fullsizechevy.com/fscu/axletech/
one thing to remember that i screwed up DONT force the diff back in it should go in easily but with no side to side play if its to hard to put in there are too many spacers
another thing if you are going to change the pinion bearing races you might want to reconsider cause it sucks but i still did even though my mechanic buddy said that i didnt need to cause races last forever
but good luck to ya

Re: Ring and Pinion Help

More like a LOT of determination.. at least for me
Just remember you will get sick and tired of taking the pinion in and out. One thing I recommend is some brass punches so you can pound on stuff (such as the pinion) without damaging it. I took the pinion out several times for adjustments and didn't pay enough attention and ended up with some damaged threads because of it. Took some grinding to get that pinion nut on there. Plus my first pinion seal from the kit went bad from the pinion getting pounded in and out, and it took an impact wrench to get the front pinion bearing tight against the crush sleeve, I just couldn't get the pinion nut to tighten up enough by hand. It was pretty funny I didn't have to do anything after that either it was at 20 in-lbs. I get a slight whine with 4.11s in drive and coast, but nothing ridiculous or obnoxious. They seem to be holding up fairly well, they'll chirp the 315s I've got out back anyway. We'll see how long they last, in the meantime I'll be saving for a 9 inch.

Re: Ring and Pinion Help

I just finished the job myself. I had a mech. buddy come over and install the pinion for me. I did all the rest myself. No trouble but quite a lot of time involved.

Re: Ring and Pinion Help

I just kinda jumped into my 4.11 install. Took me about 4 days to make sure i got it all right, but it turned out great. I've never been able to hear any whine sound, so i guess i did it right. If you have the tools and aptience, i'd say go for it. You need a dial indicator and stand, calipers, inch and ft lb torque wrenches, might ned a big ****ing hamer if the pinion is stuck, slide bearing puller, bearing installer... wait a second... thats rediculous, just have a good shop do it. I guess i was just crazy when i decided to do mine.
