Richmond Gear Noise.

I finally buttoned it up lastnight and drove it for the first time with the 3.73 Richmonds in it. Just curious as to how much noise is ok? I have no noise will accelerating, but I do have a mild whine on the coast side of the gears. I've got them set at 12 thousandths backlash just like Richmond calls for but I have been told that is too much that I should back it down to 5-7. The GM specs on stock gears is 5-9 thousandths. The pinion is shimmed to the same depth as stock. Any ideas if this is ok or should I do some adjusting? Thanks.

Angry

Well I tore it back down this weekend set the back lash to around 6-7 thousandths and still have the whine. Any ideas? The pinion is set at 30 thousandths. According to Richmond these are good tolerences. It just seems a little too loud to me. THanks.

I had a coast whine after changing a pinion seal. I had the pinion too tight. Backed off pinion nut a tad and noise went away. Still quiet after 40k.

Richmond gears are noisey because of the cut of the gear teeth which was ment for racing. Your set up may be fine but that is the nature of those gears.
