Replacing torque converter

How much should I expect to pay to get my torque converter switched out? Is this something that I could do myself? I have switched out my own cam and heads so I'd say I am somewhat mechanically inclined but that was a huge pita.

Re: Replacing torque converter

i have done quite a few 3rd and 4th gen tranny swaps/ tq converter swaps and it took me about 4 hours to get the tranny out the first time in a totaled out 87 TA, i got it down to about 2-3 hours by myself with a floor jack. it is pretty straight forward, i would recommend getting a 24" extention with a swivel socket for a couple of the bolts. if you did a head/cam swap you should be able to do a torque converter swap, the dipstick is probably the most pain in the *** part and even that isnt that bad. it really helps to have a buddy help. also, the lines suck ***, but they always do. i would take a torqu converter swap over a cam swap any day.

Re: Replacing torque converter

I charge 100 bucks.

Dealorships and trans places charge around 250-300 and even up to 400. I think tranny shops are cheaper to get them swapped at, since that's all they do.

If you have done head and cam swap then you can do this. The hardest part is the bolts on top of the bellhousing...you need a swivel socket and about a 3-4ft extension. It makes them a ton easier. Helps to have a friend help too, to help steady the wrench and extension while you pop the socket on the bolt--not to mention with the 4ft extension it gets wobbly.

I have a trick that can cut your time down by a ton

I'd say i could do it in probably 3 to 3.5 hours (assuming it's alreaday in the air and ready to go---man i wish i had a lift)

If you decide to do this and get stuck shoot me an e-mail or hit me up on messanger or something, i can help you through it if you get stuck.

well i haven't actually got it yet but i was looking at one on ebay because i don't want a really high stall just 2400-2600. something like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW
What do you think? Since I installed my camshaft I had to get a new engine and now need to put my camshaft back in. If any of you guys would like to help with either the cam or the torque converter, i'd be willing to pay you and maybe we could all get real drunk and do it. I mean start off sober and end up real drunk lol.

Re: Replacing torque converter

I think I'd go a bit higher than that for the stall--I say 2800 at least. Unless your worried about gas milage. That is a good deal, but i am always skeptical of the cheper units and how well they do.
